S&P 500 sets fresh record as TSX extends gains for a third session
Technology strength and falling oil prices and Treasury yields pushed the S&P 500 to a new intraday high, while the TSX composite builds on its recovery from a sharp decline the week before.
The S&P 500 climbed to a fresh intraday record this week, rising 0.58% to close at 7,818.93, boosted by gains in major technology names alongside declining oil prices and Treasury yields.
Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 130.96 points, or 0.37%, to close at 35,649.51 — its third consecutive session of gains, extending a recovery that began after a sharp decline the previous week, with tech-sector strength cited as a key driver.
S&P 500 companies are expected to report year-over-year earnings-per-share growth of roughly 27% for the third quarter, a figure that will test whether the rally's underlying fundamentals support the index's climb — the S&P 500 is now up close to 19% compared with the same point last year.
